The Media – Tales of a half empty glass

Glass half empty or half full? You decideStepping outside for a coffee today I walked past one of the local news stands which had on display copies of one of the local rags baring the headline “Unemployment to hit 1 Million!” (A figure pretty large by Australian standards).

It kind of got me to thinking how helpful, or perhaps more to the point; unhelpful the media are being during these tough economic times.

If I was out of work now, the last thing I’d like to see is a headline confirming that I’d become a simple statistic. Sure, times are bad but what about some optimistic news for once. The glass shouldn’t always be half empty but I’m guessing that half full glasses wouldn’t sell as many news papers.

Here in Australia the government is handing out cash in the hope that it will help ‘stimulate the economy’. Seeing headlines like this simply makes folks worry about their future with any free handouts being kept for a rainy day.

Come on newspaper people…. give us a cheery headline for once!
