You decide" src="http://www.work-jobs-employment.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/glass-half-empty-150x150.jpg" alt="Glass half empty or half full? You decide" width="150" height="150" />Stepping outside for a coffee today I walked past one of the local news stands which had on display copies of one of the local rags baring the headline “Unemployment to hit 1 Million!” (A figure pretty large by Australian standards).

It kind of got me to thinking how helpful, or perhaps more to the point; unhelpful the media are being during these tough economic times.

If I was out of work now, the last thing I’d like to see is a headline confirming that I’d become a simple statistic. Sure, times are bad but what about some optimistic news for once. The glass shouldn’t always be half empty but I’m guessing that half full glasses wouldn’t sell as many news papers.

Here in Australia the government is handing out cash in the hope that it will help ‘stimulate the economy’. Seeing headlines like this simply makes folks worry about their future with any free handouts being kept for a rainy day.

Come on newspaper people…. give us a cheery headline for once!

It looks like the unemployment rates for countries around the world are reaching all time highs. The USA is seeing rates nearing 10%, as are The UK and Australia with the folks in many European countries such as Spain seeing unemployment rates of nearly 18%

At least you know that if your out of work then you are not alone. On the flip side, the fact that your not alone will probably not help you so much in your search for a new job.

Be it due to the media putting a positive spin on things or perhaps the faint glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel; the term ‘peaking at’ seems to be proceeding many of these new percentage figures so lets keep our fingers crossed that this will truly be the case.

Surely, it can’t get any worse can it?

OK, that’s a virtual echo and I think life online will remain like this for some time however Work Jobs Employment is now live… Yay!

I have little idea how popular this site will become or whether or not it will draw a single visitor but for me the creation of this site fills the need for a hobby so if your are reading this (and your not me) then welcome?

It’s a pretty crap time to be looking for a new job in anyone’s book and it’s not going to get any easier. A couple of weeks ago I found myself in the situation where my job (and that of many of my work colleagues) was at the risk of being made redundant. Thankfully I escaped the ‘chop’ on this occasion however many (in fact most) of my work colleagues were not so lucky.

If I’m being honest, the thought of being out of work terrified me. Like many folks I have 101 financial commitments. I have a mortgage, a wife and two kids to feed and in the weeks leading up to getting the news I was left thinking what the hell would I do if I found myself out of work.

It’s been a long time since I had to look for a job and doing a quick Google in my search for advice brought a mixture of results.

My aim in launching this site is to provide a “one stop shop” for anyone who has recently found themeselves out of work or are looking for a new direction in their life from a career perspective. I don’t profess to being an expert but the principals that I will write about on this site are based on research, verified resources and feedback from friends and colleagues within the recruitment industry.

On the basis that it’s out there somewhere, my search for a more secure job will continue and I’ll share any top tips and advice as I progress on my own journey.

In the meantime, I hope you’ll find the resources and articles contained within our site of use to you during your own journeys

Cheers

Mark
